Let’s take this outside! The best outdoor theatre experiences in Cornwall.

Cornwall is known for its stunning, diverse landscapes and independent, creative spirit. Moorlands and woods, beaches and coves, mine ruins and gardens all provide the perfect backdrop for theatrical storytelling in the form of immersive, outdoor performances. From fun entertainment for little ones, to serious drama on a Shakespearean scale, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Cornwall’s outdoor theatre scene. We’ve rounded up some of the best venues and theatre companies to help you get stuck in…

The Minack Theatre

Where else could we start but at this spectacular clifftop amphitheatre at Porthcurno? The Minack Theatre is a world-famous cradle of creative endeavour, hewn into the rock overlooking one of Cornwall’s most picturesque beaches.

Evening performances and matinees take place most days during the summer, with only the most inclement weather calling a halt to proceedings. The programme is always varied, with different audiences catered for, and the performances are bought to stage by a mixture of visiting companies and the talented in-house production team.

Miracle Theatre

During the summer, the Miracle Theatre players take their shows on the road, popping up on Cornish clifftops, in sub-tropical gardens and on village greens. Each magical performance is a feet of storytelling, visual splendour and technical ability, with a well-written cast of memorable characters taking the audience on a journey which may be funny, serious, compelling or contrary – or all of the above!

Penlee Park

The ‘theatre in the park in the heart of Penzance’ is a popular venue for concerts, films, theatre, poetry and talks. Squashbox Theatre, Miracle Theatre and Heartbreak Theatre all regularly take to the stage here, and the venue is particularly good for families given the wider park setting.

Rogue Theatre

This immersive theatre company always delivers an exciting, life-affirming experience in a wild setting, and has become particularly known for its seasonal performances in Tehidy Woods. At Christmas, Easter and during the summer months, the woods come alive with imaginative stage sets – portals into the worlds of fairies, pirates, spirits and magical woodland creatures.

Trebah Garden

Trebah, a stunning valley of sub-tropical planting and winding pathways, is home to a large amphitheatre – a summer venue for comedy, live music and theatre. There’s a strong family element to the programming but there are grown-up tales too, and the cost of a ticket includes entry to the garden on the day of the performance.

Sterts Theatre

This natural amphitheatre is in the grounds of an old pig farm ‘on the grassy side of Bodmin moor’. Sheltered by a huge rain canopy, it provides an unusual setting for 400 guests at a time to watch live music, comedy, plays and musicals. Like the Minack, we suggest taking blankets, cushions and a picnic to extract maximum enjoyment from your visit.
